Dr. Michael Rivera was born and raised in New York City. He graduated from Binghamton University in 1997 with a degree in biochemistry and obtained his medical doctorate at Downstate Medical Center in 2001. He completed an anatomic and clinical pathology residency program at Weil-Cornell Medical Center in 2005. From 2005-2008, Dr Rivera completed fellowships in oncologic surgical pathology, cytopathology and head and neck/ endocrine pathology. Dr Rivera then went on to be the director of head and neck pathology at Mount Sinai from 2008-2010. In 2011, he joined the faculty at the Mayo Clinic as assistant professor. He currently participates in the head and neck, endocrine, cytopathology and frozen section working groups. He also serves as the associate residency program director of anatomic pathology. Dr. Rivera has thirty peer reviewed journal articles in publication. His primary research interest is the study of thyroid carcinomas.
